SRD‎ > ‎Mage the Awakening‎ > ‎

Character: Advancement

As opposed to a traditional D20 leveling system, this game is run more off of a point buy system like mutuants and masterminds.  Beginning characters generated from the beginning character rules are considered PL 8.  At the end of every successful adventure, the characters will be awarded 1 or 2 Power Points.  These power points can be spent to buy any stat or ability based on the chart below:

Ability Score 1 per 1 stat point Save Bonus 1 per +1 bonus
Attack Bonus 2 per +1 bonus Class Skill 1 per 4 skill ranks
Defense Bonus 2 per +1 bonus Non-Class Skill 1 per 2 skill ranks
Feats 1 per feat or feat rank

Mage Sphere Rank 10 per rank
 Mage Gnosis 5 per Gnosis
 Werewolf Rite 5 per Rite

Hit Dice / Hit Points - Periodically, the GM will determine that the characters have earned enough Power Points to increase the Power Level of the campaign.  When this happens, the characters will all increase hitpoints as if gaining an additional hit die (D6 for Mages, D12 for Werewolves, etc).  By default, a character gains 1/2 of their Hit Die per level + CON Bonus.

Power Level Limits - To keep the characters from maxing all their advancement in in one area and totally unbalancing their characters, advancement in every aspect is limited by the Power Level of the Campaign.  See the Chart Below:
